Difference between DEEN and RELIGION

When Islam is characterized as a religion it seems as if it is just one of the other religions in the word. This concept has been rejected by the Holy Quran is unequivocal terms in the following verses:

  • Islam is the only right way of life in the sight of Allah. (Al- Imran: 19)
  • And whose ever adopts any other way except Islam that shall not be accepted from him and is Hereafter he shall be among the losers. (Al- Imran: 85)

These two verses also identify Islam as a “way of life”, it is incorrect to understand Islam as a religion only. It is a DEEN which means a complete code of life. Religion deals with private affairs of life whereas DEEN covers all aspects of life, individual as well as collective. In other words DEEN is all embracing term which includes religion – socio – political – economic system. It touches upon the material as well as spiritual dimensions of human existence and insists that all our Thoughts and deeds should be performed with GOD consciousness.

Difference between DEEN and RELIGION:

 Individually VS collectivity:

The first difference between religion and DEEN is in the frame of reference. Religion is merely seems sort of subjective experience and is concerned only with the so called private relationship between GOD and man. Whereas DEEN is an objective reality and a system of collective life. Every follower of a religion is satisfied that he has established a communion with the Almighty, and the objective of each individual is his own salvation. The aim of DEEN on the other hand is the welfare and progress of all mankind, and the character and constitution of a society indicates whether or not it is founded upon the divine law.

DEEN has been approved of and favored by Allah (SWT), and is also declared complete in all dimensions.

Today. I have completed your DEEN. And have completed my bliss upon you and accepted for you Islam as a DEEN” (Al- Maida 5:3).

Hostility VS argumentation to reason and Investigation:

Religion is witnessed to be hostile towards scientific investigation and is an adversary of reason, so that it could flourish unhampered with the aid of a blind faith.

DEEN, on the other hand, helps in development of human reason. And knowledge allows full freedom to accept or reject on the basis of reasons and arguments, and encourages investigation and discovery of all the natural phenomena to illuminate the path of human life and its advancement in light of the permanent values.

Diversion VS harmony towards realities of life:

Religion follows the susceptibilities and prejudice of men and pampers them. In every age religion therefor sets up new idols and mumbo- jumbos in order to keep the people’s attention away from the real problems of life.

Contrarily, DEEN seeks to lead men to a path of life that is in harmony with realities of life. principles.

Inducing discouragement VS Inducing courage:

Religion induces a perpetual sense of discouragement in the minds of men and seeks to frighten them into conformity. Religion prompts men to bow before every seat of authority and prestige, religious as well as temporal.

However, DEEN treats this as a form of polytheism and seeks to make men courageous daring and self- reliant. DEEN encourage man to walk about with his head erect and attain self – confidence.

Say, He is Allah, Who is one, Allah, the eternal refuge” (Quran 112:1-2)

A set of rituals VS a way of life:

Religion provides a narrow sense and view towards life. Its scope is limited to set of dogmas, some rituals for worship and a number of social customs to celebrate important life events.

DEEN on the other hand, is a complete system of life in which human beings surrender themselves to the sovereignty of a higher authority, and live a life of tested obedience under the system of that higher authority. DEEN covers entire life as described in the upper points.
